Online Scams

Internet has recovered now from dot-com hangover. According to various report and survey the retail sales have seen an approx 25% increase in past 5-6 years. The domain name registration has reached all time high of approx 64 million.

But all things are not positive there is something negative too. Internet Crime is also on the wheels of skating. It is speeding up with time.

Complaints about online fraud have nearly tripled itself from 2004 to 2010. Research Company Gartner reveals that online scams like phishing e-mails seeking, hacking is on its climax. Several Cyber crimes laws are made to restrict this type of miss happening but the success rate is still far behind.

Lets us give a look on common scamming that is popular in market:-

Auction: It shares ¾ of the online fraud complain. The site owner gives a vague description of any product and convinces you to buy the product. Generally the users don’t get the product, and if they get any product that is below par the price paid for it.

One of my friends just got a web address for $18 where she can buy camera for $200 discount. She was promised of a camera for $300. So whenever going for auction think from heart and mind and decide is it possible to sell $1000 product at $100. So, be aware and save yourself.

Phishing: A very risky scamming, the user receive an official mail from a legitimate bank. The mail ask him to provide some personal information, user very easily provide all detail. And the trouble starts here. The mail is actually fake and your information is sold to criminals who use it to earn from your credit cards. So, whenever you receive any such mail give a call to your bank, confirm it and then proceed.

Nigerian 419 letter: A very dangerous kind of scamming. According to reports, there is seen serious financial loss and sometime victims of Nigerian letter fraud have been killed or gone missing while chasing a 419 scheme.

The mail you receive read like this

“DEAR SIR/MADAM: I REPRESENT THE RECENTLY DEPOSED MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE FOR NODAMBIZIA, WHO HAS EMBEZZLED 30 MILLION DOLLARS FROM HIS STARVING COUNTRYMEN AND NOW NEEDS TO GET IT OUT OF THE COUNTRY…”

They ask for advance money and finally you end up losing the money.

Congratulations Mail: The mail you receive will congratulating you for winning expensive electronics good and will ask for shipping and handling charge.

You will be excited and end up paying the initial amount. But Alas! The product will never arrive. So while answering these emails give a deep thought and ask have I ever played a contest.

After compiling a lot of research and personal stories from people who have been hit hard by internet job scams, these three have made the top of the scammer list.  Beware!

Data Entry Jobs

The advertisements on the internet for data entry jobs are numerous and they all claim there is much money to be made by simply inputting data.  However, when someone looks more closely into these opportunities, they find these “jobs” require a fee in order for anyone to receive their start up information, which turns out to be nothing but a waste of time and money.  Data entry is a minimum wage job opportunity; companies do not need to pay two or three times as much for the same work.

Multi Level Marketing

Multi Level Marketing, or MLM, is an illegal pyramid scheme that gets people to pay to join their team and in turn, those people pay others to join and the same pattern continues on down the line.  The only people who actually make tons of money from this are those who started the MLM scheme.  Eventually, every Multi Level Marketing “opportunity” goes downhill, leaving all of its investors in a world of financial trouble.

Paid Surveys

Paid surveys are perhaps one of the most annoying internet jobs scams to date.  Yes, there are a few paid survey websites that will actually pay people for filling out surveys and offering opinions; however, they are a rarity.  The truth is that you cannot make enough to replace your day job income; you can make a few dollars at best for tedious and time consuming work.

Of course, there are plenty of ways to make money on the internet without being taken for every dollar you have, but it takes time, effort, and caution to find them.
